Finding the Common Ground: Bridging the Public Health Model with Feminist Philosophy
Lorien Castelle

Eradicating domestic violence requires that all agencies and systems, not just domestic violence programs, engage in community wide efforts that encourage individuals and institutions to challenge attitudes, behaviors, and norms that support violence against women in our society. This workshop will provide participants with some of the resources and information necessary to stimulate prevention activities in our agencies and in our communities. Workshop topics include: expanding our efforts beyond intervention to address and eliminate the root causes of domestic violence; the critical components needed to infuse community wide efforts to end domestic violence with a focus on prevention; as wells as, core principles, theories and strategies that support primary prevention efforts, including how to translate the science-based approach of the public health model to be more community and practitioner-friendly.

Participants will be challenged through interactive presentation and exercises to explore the ways in which privilege and power support systems of oppression, including domestic violence. This workshop will appeal to all practitioners who are interested in promoting social justice and eliminating violence against women in our communities.
